REHEARSAL & PERFORMANCE POLICIES.
· Rehearsal and Performance Policy
As with any academic class or competitive team, every member of the marching band is expected to be present, prepared, and fully participating in all rehearsals and class periods.
Consistent attendance is essential. It allows the ensemble to learn new material, make necessary adjustments, and maintain the competitive edge we are working toward. Missing rehearsals — for any reason — can impact a student’s performance opportunities.
This policy exists for three important reasons:
Safety – ensuring every performer knows their responsibilities on the field.
Fairness – so the entire ensemble can rehearse and improve together.
Quality – to uphold the high standards we set for ourselves as a performing group.
**Important Note** Missing Rehearsals Policy
During the competitive season (September 14 to November 7), missing more than one rehearsal in the week of a competition—or missing the final rehearsal before a competition (typically Thursday)—may result in a student being excluded from all or part of that week’s performance.
If students miss rehearsals and are therefore unable to perform in the show, they are still expected to attend the competition and will be assigned a secondary role (such as tech crew or prop support) for that event.
Students who choose to miss the competition entirely will not be allowed to participate in any subsequent performances without the approval of all four caption heads (executive staff).
All situations will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
· Rehearsal, Performance & Culture Etiquette: Be Coachable
Being a member of the marching band is a privilege that comes with high expectations, similar to participation in competitive sports, concert band, dance teams, or academic classes.
All students are expected to be coachable — that is, willing to accept instruction, feedback, and guidance with a positive and respectful attitude.
Staff are committed to building strong connections with students and delivering coaching in a supportive, constructive manner. In return, students are expected to remain open, attentive, and responsive to direction at all times during rehearsals and performances.
· State Championship and BOA Performance Policy
As an ensemble, we are traveling to St. George to compete in the State Marching Band Championship and the Bands of America (BOA) Regional the following day. These events represent the culmination of our entire season’s work.
Every member of the marching band is expected to attend and fully participate in this trip. This includes planning ahead to meet all financial responsibilities through active participation in fundraisers, summer work, and saving as needed. While parents ultimately oversee their child’s decisions and finances, it is the band’s policy that students take personal responsibility for fulfilling the commitments required to participate in marching band.
**Important Note** Parents have the right to choose not to have their students attend the State Championship and BOA trip. However, if a student is unable to attend for any reason, they will not be assigned soloist, featured ensemble, or other prominent performance roles for the season. In such cases, the student may instead be given supporting responsibilities such as tech crew or prop movement.
This policy is not intended as punishment. It is simply a practical decision to allow us to plan and rehearse effectively and ensure reliable and confirmed performance participation.
Students and parents must indicate in writing by **July 7** whether the student will be attending the trip.
· Pass-offs & Fee Payment Performance Policy
To be eligible to perform in competitions, students must successfully complete the following pass-offs:
Marching Basics – Due August 2026
Music Pass-offs – Due August 2026
General Marching Band – Due dates listed on the Payment Schedule
St. George Marching Band Trip – Due dates listed on the Payment Schedule
Students who do not complete these required pass-offs by the stated deadlines will not be eligible to perform in competitions or trips, until pass offs and fees have been completed.
· Grades & Academic Performance Policy
In accordance with school and UHSAA guidelines, all marching band members must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA with no failing (F) or unsatisfactory (U) grades to remain eligible for competitions and trips. Members are expected to uphold high academic standards both on and off the field. If a student falls below this requirement, they will lose performance privileges until all F’s or U’s are resolved and the 2.0 GPA is restored.
· Physical Strength & Health Policy
Marching band is a physically demanding activity. All students are expected to maintain the conditioning and health necessary to meet the demands of rehearsals and performances. Students and parents should plan proactively for the students’ physical well-being throughout the competitive season (September 7 through November 8).
· Physical Conditioning Expectations
Conditioning: Students are expected to actively improve and maintain their fitness level through participation in rehearsals and personal conditioning. Know your limits and work consistently to develop the endurance required.
Strength: Be aware of the physical strength needed for your specific instrument. Some students may be encouraged to incorporate weight training as part of their preparation.
Medical Conditions: Students with any medical conditions must know their limits and communicate them clearly. You are responsible for understanding how far you can safely push yourself.
Physical Exam (Recommended): While not required, it is strongly recommended that students obtain a physical from their doctor. This helps us safely modify activities or instrument assignments if needed. Our goal is to find a meaningful role for every student so they can fully participate as part of the team.
· Dress and Grooming Standards:
Students are expected to maintain a professional appearance consistent with the character and theme of the show. Altering natural hair color or making significant changes to appearance is not permitted unless it is pre-approved and fits the artistic needs of the performance. Hair dye is not allowed if it cannot be naturally covered by the uniform.
Students must always maintain good personal hygiene to support both individual health and the overall performance readiness of the ensemble.
**Injury Prevention**
Students are expected to avoid activities that could cause injury and jeopardize their ability to fulfill competition responsibilities. This includes scheduling other procedures (such as wisdom teeth removal) outside the competitive season whenever possible.

1. Fill out fee waiver for DSD – a link to do this can be found on the CHS School homepage or by contacting the CHS main office.
2. Make every effort to participate in fundraisers the band participates in. Though this is not a requirement please note to cover the costs, the funds need to come from somewhere. We must take those costs out of fundraised money and not student fees. Please help us in this effort to make it possible for all to participate.
Please note – if students decide to drop Marching Band mid-season, they will still be responsible for all fees that have already been paid for. The state championship and BOA trip will be the responsibility of the student/parents if dropped after, or student become ineligible due to grades or citizenship if dropped AFTER student has been assigned to a hotel room.
Please add signatures on the next page. You will also be required to digitally sign the document on DSD at the beginning of the official class (July 7).
